The drive shaft is split in two by a differential between the axle housings, becoming two half-shafts. The two straw hats are not simply worn on the head, but are directly connected to the two half shafts inside. There is an additional joint and universal joint at the "neck" of the half shaft, so the half shaft has also become two parts, the inner half shaft and the outer half shaft.
